NVIDIA’s HENS Revolutionizes Extreme Weather Prediction Without Supercomputers
NVIDIA, in collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has launched Huge Ensembles (HENS), a machine learning tool that delivers supercomputer-grade weather forecasting at a fraction of the cost. The open-source solution predicts extreme events—from heat waves to hurricanes—with unprecedented lead times of six hours to 14 days.
HENS operates at a 15-mile resolution, offering actionable insights for climate scientists and emergency responders. Its development, documented in Geoscientific Model Development, marks a leap in ensemble simulation reliability. The tool eliminates dependency on costly supercomputers, democratizing access to high-stakes weather modeling.
